Day 1 -Captured Currency Ring

Student Level: Intermediate

Prerequisites: Students must have a basic grasp on soldering and be comfortable with a torch.


This single day workshops will focus on building a setting for an antique Chinese coin.  Focusing on depth and detailed work, students will fabricate a housing for this ancient currency using a compound bezel/prong setting.  Tube setting and the construction of an open-style ring shank will also be covered.  This is an intermediate class- students should come with a moderate knowledge of using a torch and saw.


Instructor will provide fully equipped soldering stations including all chemicals and compounds, flexshafts and accessories, a few extra hand tools for student use, high quality handouts and kits containing all raw materials to make this project.


Students are responsible for bringing:

  • Bench pin with clamp (a large C clamp or Bessey clamp is recommended- available on Amazon)

  • Saw frame and 2/0 blades

  • Flat file #2 cut

  • Miter jig

  • Sharpie or scribe

  • Bench block

  • Ring mandrel with sizes marked

  • Planishing hammer

  • Small rawhide or nylon mallet

  • Flush cutters

  • Half-round/flat pliers (example: )

  • **Chain or Cord (optional if student would rather make a pendant)


Recommended but optional:

Sketchbook or notebook and pencil
